Is It Legal To Donate Or Throw Away Belongings Left By A Former Roommate?

Card image cap

Location: Colorado

My former college roommate (F21) moved out of our apartment about a year ago. When she left, she still had a bunch of random stuff here. A few months after she moved out, she text me she forgot stuff and I boxed everything up and put it out for her to come get it. She eventually came by, but only took some of her stuff and left the rest behind. After that, I brought the boxes of stuff she left back inside and put them in our storage room.

Fast forward to now: we are about to graduate this semester and my current roommate (M21) and I (F22) are trying to clean out the storage room, and we honestly don’t know what to do with her stuff anymore. She’s not on the lease, hasn’t paid rent at all in the year since she moved out, and we haven’t heard from her since the one time she picked up part of her things.

At this point, is her stuff considered abandoned? Are we legally allowed to toss it or donate it? It’s mostly just basic household/kitchen items—nothing important like passports or legal documents. I just don’t want this to somehow come back and bite us later.
