Can I Be Fired For Feeding The Homeless?
Location: Chicago
So I work as a dishwasher for a fancy restaurant in the loop. Across the street from our side door is an alley way where our dumpsters are. In a little outcropping there's a man who sleeps there, he isn't aggressive and doesn't bother us when we're back there. So I've started bringing him food and water when I can. Now as a dishwasher any food that comes back to me is trash. Usually the food is in good condition but again of it comes back to me no one cares what happens to it so I'm not stealing from the company. That's the food I'm giving to him, if I'm not busy I'll portion out some for him in a to go container and bring it when I take out the trash.
Today one of the servers saw me bringing him food and said our GM was upset because someone keeps feeding him and they want him to leave. Idk who owns the property he sleeps on because again it's across the street and there's apartment buildings above our dumpsters, I'm going to continue to feed him but I'm wondering if I need to have a back up plan in case I can be fired for this.
Edit: I also know I'm not the only person feeding him, another dishwasher brings him food and water sometimes and one of our two chefs has given him food before too.
