Can I Deny My Job’s Request To Access My Medical Records? State: Tn

Wasn’t sure if this fell under disability law or employment law (surely both), so I hope the flair isn’t misleading. Location: TN

My doctor’s office requires 14 business days to draft up FMLA/accommodation forms. Not entirely sure why, none of my other office’s need this amount of time, but this one does. My last appointment and my delivering them of the FMLA paperwork was 8 business days ago.

My employer is putting incredible heat on me to get the paperwork as soon as possible. I’ve offered to share my emails back and forth with their front desk to show that it’s in the process of being drafted, but they really just need the paperwork now to the point where my boss is hounding me on my off days to go sit in my doctor’s office and demand paperwork.

It has now turned into my boss demanding that I sign a release of my medical records to them so that they can call my doctor on my behalf, which makes me incredibly uncomfortable due to the nature of the issue I’m having (I am having to get a hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis). I do not want to give them access to my medical records from my OBGYN.

Are they allowed to demand that of me, and then possibly terminate if I say no?

If context matters, I’m not asking for any accommodations that interfere with my ability to do my job yet, it’s solely related to the time off I would need when I have my surgery and then accommodations after. Giving them access to my medical records seems like overkill.
