Can I Keep The Cat My Abusive Mom Bought?

Card image cap

Location: Texas, USA.
[TLDR:] My sister is stuck in an abusive situation because she won’t leave without her cat. I am convinced she has to leave the cat and save herself because our mom is petty enough to push charges to get the cat back (it is a purebred expensive cat). I do not think the cat is in any danger with our mom. Our mom loves the cat more than she ever loved me or my sis.

[Context:] I am writing this on behalf of my little sister who is still living with our mom. We are both in our twenties, in the difference is that I convinced my mom to let me go to a university out of state (less supervision). I was able to get a job and save money to leave my mom once and for all. My mother has a long history of verbally and physically abusing myself and my little sis.

Unfortunately, my mother has learned her lesson. My sister attends university within driving distance. My mother forced my sis to download a tracking app (life360). My sis has tried to secure a job but every time she starts a job our mom shuts it down. (Ex: one of my mom’s friends offered my sis and job and they started filling out paperwork, my mom said sis does not need a job and closed off that opportunity. If our mom thinks shes at a place for a job she will spam call and yell at my sis till she comes home. If my sis does not get home our mom will drive out there and fix that). Just earlier this week my sis went to vote (without telling our mom), our mom guessed correctly based on the location that my sis was in line to vote, so she spam called my sis and yelled at her and threatened her until she went home (and did not vote—our mom believes very strongly in one party and it is heresy to vote ant differently).

I think my sis recently got a banking account, recent as in this year. I have offered on multiple occasions to sponsor a plane ticket and let my sis live with myself and my partner so she can get a job and start to live independent of our mom.

[The Issue:] The only hiccup is that our mom bought a purebred (expensive) cat that my sis has fallen in love with. My sis refuses to move out with me unless I let her bring the cat too. Knowing our mom and how petty she can be, and how desperate for control she is, I am convinced she will pursue legal action to get the cat back from my sister (and possibly make my sis come back to our mom). I have told her my concerns but my sis is stubborn.

[The Question:] is there ANY way for my sister to take this cat and strike out on her own and ultimately keep the cat even if dragged through court?
