Can My Employer Force Me To Use My Personal Car For Deliveries Without Reimbursement?
I work at a small printing shop in Ohio and my boss recently told me I need to start doing client deliveries as part of my job. The thing is, I was hired as a front desk person and the job posting never mentioned driving or deliveries at all. Now he says if I dont use my own car to drop off orders a few times a week, he'll cut my hours.
He's not offering any mileage reimbursement or gas money. Some of these deliveries are like 20-30 miles away. I asked about using a company vehicle and he said they dont have one and cant afford to rent anything. When I brought up mileage pay he basically laughed and said that's not in the budget either.
I'm worried about the wear on my car and also my insurance. I called my insurance company and they said if I'm using my vehicle for work purposes regularly, I might need commercial coverage, which is way more expensive. My boss said that's my problem to figure out.
Is it legal for him to just change my job duties like this and require me to use my own vehicle without any compensation? Can he actually cut my hours if I refuse? I really need this job but I cant afford to destroy my car or get in trouble with my insurance.
