Can My Ex-roommate Make My Friend Pay $4000 To Not Call The Cops On Him?
Location: Florida
For context all parties involved are in college and shared an off-campus apartment together. There are 4 of us total.
So my ex-roommate (E.R.) moved out quietly about 4 months ago with zero contact with any of us since, taking most of his things but leaving some. We tried reaching out but nothing.
Flash forward to now my Friend got evicted from the apartment due to issues with family and payment, and went home for the week to figure something out. He came back this Monday, and me and my other roommate let him stay in ERs room for a few days until he figured things out. Coincidentally, E.R. came back today to get the rest of his things and was very pissed to find his room unlocked and my friend’s things in there.
E.R. threatened to call the cops and press charges on my friend for breaking and entering, and he would have to pay them the past 4 months rent, $4000, to not get the cops involved. My friend paid them $800 already just so he could leave the situation for now.
I looked into it and this feels like extortion. Can they even really make him pay $4000 for no legal action even though he only stayed 2 nights? What are our options? Any advice helps.
