Car Accident Without Insurance, Contacted By Other Drivers Insurance Company
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Inexcusable I know, but I was unaware my insurance had been cancelled since I moved addresses. I’m a carpenter and was hauling some plywood on my roof rack (which I do regularly). It was fastened well, no negligence on my part, however a piece literally broke when I was driving the speed limit and cracked the windshield of the driver behind me.
I thought we had agreed to deal without insurance (before I even know mine was cancelled), because it’s just a windshield, but today I got a call from her insurer asking for a statement which I did not give. I want to comply without digging myself deeper - what is my best option? I offered to replace her windshield without insurance even before I knew mine had been cancelled because it was just windshield.
Should I admit this to her insurer and work with them? Should I contact the driver directly? Do I certify with DMV etc and just wait ? I understand financial repercussions can be steep, but I need to avoid license suspension.
