Church Pastor Changed Bylaws And Property Deed Without Board Approval.
Location: Montana
I am writing to seek clarification on whether certain actions taken by my church's leadership was legal and if not, what we can do about it.
I am a member of a congregation that merged with another church approximately one year ago. Following the merger, both original entities were dissolved and a new entity was created. Since then, several issues have come to light:
- Property Ownership: The property ownership of our building was changed by our pastor and his secretary without the congregation's knowledge.
- Bylaw Amendments: After our bylaws were finalized by the board, the pastor and his secretary unilaterally altered them to grant the pastor complete control. These changes include providing the pastor with veto authority over the board, designating the pastor as the only individual authorized to call meetings, and increasing the requirement for accountability board actions from a two-thirds majority to a unanimous majority.
There have also been concerning reports of spiritual abuse that do not follow the moral standards of the church.
Could you please advise if these matters are actionable?
