Client Not Paying Me For Completed Work

Card image cap

Location: California

I’m a landscape designer and my client ghosted me on their 3rd invoice because they don’t like the design (despite it being what they asked for). I mostly communicated with them about the design over email, so I have records of them approving the plants, layout, etc.

The invoice is for ~$350 and is almost a month over due now. They ghosted me. I obviously know where they live (I measured their yard and house ????) so my plan is to send a certified letter demanding payment. I’ve sent three emails and a text message about it as well.

I guess I’m wondering if it’s worth the effort of going through small claims? It’s a significant sum to me but also sounds like a lot of work to recover, even if I can. They definitely own their home, so I could put a lien on it. But how many people actually get their money back?

I’m just tired. Any is advice appreciated. We have a contract that has late penalties included as well.
