Computer Repairman Is Holding My Laptop Hostage, Do I Have A Legal Standing To Demand It Back?

Location: New York City

So my laptop broke quite severely, like a part of the motherboard literally exploded. Im trying to figure out if it's salvageable and find a laptop repair shop in my area with hundreds of positive reviews. I go there and find it's just one guy operating out of his apartment ???? no harm no foul on my part, i don't mind going to an independent contractor for a repair. He tells me he has to diagnose the problem then he'll get back to me with a quote.....then he doesn't. For weeks.

I keep texting him asking for updates on the repair, I'm met with either radio silence or a response as little as "not ready yet". He refused to give me a time/nor cost estimate of the repair no matter how many times I asked. This back and forth goes on for 3 and a half months. If you're wondering why I've waited this long, Id really like to not have to replace my laptop entirely since I'm a film editor and need a high performing device, and I didn't want to take it back from him too early in case he charged me for a device still in disrepair.

That leads us to today, I ask him for the soonest date I can pick up my device regardless of whether it's fixed or not because I'm sick of the back and forth. He says I can pick it up Sunday but since he's replaced "5 components" I owe him $100. I'm torn, on one hand he did replace some pieces (I have photo proof he did) and I want to pay him for his labor, but on the other hand he dragged me along for nearly 4 months with vague answers and radio silence and wants 100 bucks for a device he didn't even remotely fix!!! I even offered to pay him more to expedite the repair which he declined.

My question is where this lies legally, I've signed literally zero paperwork and he doesn't even have a credit/debit card of mine on any account, I literally just dropped my laptop off at his apartment and that was that. Do I not have the right to just go and demand it back with no compensation since there was no agreement on paper? Is that even the morally correct thing to do? I mean I've literally lost wages during this time he's held onto it. Any advice is appreciated and feel free to tell me if I'm being an asshole!
