Concerns With Camera During Home Showings?
Location: Virginia
My wife and I recently bought a home. We are moving out of our rental, so our landlord is now scheduling showings of where we currently live. We have a doorbell camera and nest cam that is in very plain sight in our living room. No other cameras in the house. The landlord has been over several times and knows about both cameras.
Today after the first showing, we saw on our doorbell the potential tenant’s agent was quite upset they were not informed there were cameras on the property. After looking into local laws I have now disabled audio on our cameras to be safe. The landlord’s agent has been in communication w/ us and did not ask about cameras at all.
Should we inform our landlord’s agent that they need to disclose the cameras? Are we liable for this if the agent decides to take any action? We genuinely had no idea this was an issue. When we were touring homes to buy last month, we saw cameras in homes multiple times and just assumed we were always being recorded…we never got a heads up. I’m seeing online that Virginia is a one-party consent state. Is it safest to just remove our cameras? TIA
