Son Got A Fighting In Public Ticket At Our House.

My son (19) had an ex friend follow him home and attack him in the driveway. This was over a girl. The other person had 3 other people with him who I guess have recording of it. My son’s friend had also came back to our house also and saw what happened so we have witnesses. My son called the police and after they talked to the other male they came back and gave him a ticket for fighting in public but the other male was arrested but we are not sure exactly what his charges were.
He went to court this week and they offered him probation for 12 months but he fought back because he was getting beat up. He explained to the DA what happened and I asked how he got a ticket when this was on our property and he said it is still fighting in public.
Looking for an attorney now but wondering if that is going to be worth it. He is either going to pay for an attorney or have to pay for probation and fine. The attorney will probably be a lot more but I don’t want this on his record. We are also going to be moving soon and landlord do background checks on everyone on the lease. Just worried if we spend the money and then he gets found guilty. To us this is clearly self defense but now sure how a judge would see it.
