Contractor Ran My New Sewer Line Under My Neighbor’s Property Without Telling Either Of Us. Who Is Responsible For Fixing This?
I had my sewer line replaced a few months ago after the old one collapsed. The contractor used trenchless boring for most of the new line, so there was very little digging outside my yard. I paid around $8,000 and assumed everything had been installed according to the permit.
My neighbor is doing work in his backyard now and his contractor discovered that my new sewer line crosses several feet underneath his property before connecting to the main line. There is no fence between our yards and neither of us knew the exact property line, so there was nothing obvious above ground that would have tipped either of us off.
The city came out and apparently the route shown on the approved permit stays entirely on my property. The contractor installed it differently.
My neighbor wants the line moved off his property, which I understand, but the original contractor is saying relocating it would be a new job and I would have to pay again.
I never approved putting anything on my neighbor's property and had no idea they had done this.
Can the contractor really charge me again to correct a line they installed outside the approved route?
