Could We Be Asked To Leave Without Notice- Louisiana
Location: Caldwell Parish, Louisiana
Long story short->
My fiancé’s parents moved onto this property 20 years ago. They rented the land and put a mobile home here. The original verbal agreement with the landlady and my in laws was they were “renting to own” the land for $10,000. After 8 1/2 years of paying $100/ month (roughly 100 months), they approached her and asked for the deed. She explained that she had signed it over to her son and that there never was a rent to own agreement (they did not get it in writing so there wasn’t much to be done). They contacted the son, and he stated that after his mother dies, he will sign the land over to them because he remembered the original agreement and said they were treated unfairly. However, they still had to pay rent as it was part of his mother’s monthly income.
Now, both of my in laws have passed. My MIL most recently not even a month ago. I paid the rent tonight and the landlady seemed like she was ready to put another mobile home here and move back to this plot. My fiance had lived her for the full 20 years and I have lived here for 10. We know that it’s not our land and they have the right to ask us to leave. My question is, can they show up on any given day and make us leave? I have advised my fiance to reach out to the son to get a written agreement in place, but I am concerned they are going to ask us to leave and we have permanent structures on the property that would need to be moved. Any advice would be appreciated.
Edit to add: both of us have this as our permanent address on our ID’s. We both get mail here. Utilities are in our names and we pay the property taxes.
