Coworker Read My Medical Papers At Work

Card image cap

Location: Oklahoma and Texas

I live in Texas but work in Oklahoma. I commute across state lines to go to work.

Recently my husband had a stroke and needed to stay in hospital. He’s due for a follow up where he might need heart surgery.

Due to this I contacted out benefits department and asked for FMLA paperwork. I printed it out and proceeded to fill out the paperwork at my desk because it’s a time sensitive issue that needs to be submitted within a few days.

Apparently while I stepped away from my desk a coworker I’ve had difficulties with in the past (petty harassment and passive aggressive behavior on their part) glanced or read my papers and proceeded to discuss what they saw with my other coworkers.

She was telling them I was committing medical fraud and I’m submitting fraudulent paperwork because me and my husband aren’t “legally” married. By Texas law we are considered common law. We just never got official paperwork or had a wedding.

I already went to my direct supervisor as soon as I heard what she did. My question is, is there anything legally I should be doing? Like talking to a lawyer or is this a tiny issue. I feel very angry that she read my private medical info and talked about it to other people even if all she saw was my marital status. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
