Divorcing: I Paid Cash For Our House With Separate Assets; 3 Months Later My Wife Is Divorcing Me.
I've been married since 2019. In the fall of 2025 my wife and I paid cash for a modest home. The funds we used came entirely from liquidating assets that I owned since before we were married. The funds did not come from either of our income or from selling our previous home. Just three short months after the purchase, my wife decided to divorce me and wants to keep the home and "at least half" of the equity.
I have made her (and her lawyer) the offer that I am willing the let her keep the house and live in it moving forward if she is willing the pay me back the price that I paid for the house.
Is there anything I can do, arguments I can make, or legal precedent for cases where marital assets were just recently purchased?
The title to the house is in her name. I agreed to this as a convenience because she was the one mostly communicating with the realtor and I found working with the realtor annoying. At the time I thought it made no difference whether the title was in her name or mine or both because we were in a committed marriage. Now I'm left wondering whether this was a plan she laid in advance.
I am currently pro se.
