Do I Need A Will?

Card image cap

Location: WA, USA

I'm in my mid 30's. I don't have a ton of money, but I do have several thousand in a savings account and also some in a retirement account. I live with a partner, we've been together for 15 years, and don't plan to marry at this time. We don't own property, we share the same rented apartment, and also share my car, which is fully paid for and in my name. I can't think of any other assets I have, other than maybe a couple pieces of nice jewelry?

From what I understand, if I were to die, my assets/money would go to my parents, since I am unmarried. My parents and my partner get along really well (they consider him a family member), and all three of them are reasonable, kind, respectful, and practical people. I imagine if I were to die early, my parents would just give everything to him, or they would all meet and divide things up fairly. It's not like I have a ton of money for people to fight over or anything lol.

My sister just had a will written up - she named me as the guardian for her kids if she and her husband were to pass away. A will makes total sense for her situation of course, but it made me think about if that was something I needed, too.

I have been told the cost to get a will made is like 1k, which is steep for someone in my tax bracket, so I thought I'd ask how important it actually is. Hopefully this is the right place for this question, thanks for any advice!
