Do You Need A Trust In California Or Is A Will Enough When You Own A Home?
Location: California
A close friend of mine had her family spend over a year untangling her dad's estate after he passed with nothing in place and it damn near tore their family apart while they were still reeling from losing him and watching that whole thing go sideways was enough to get the ball rolling on our end.
My wife and I got married this past spring and bought our first home in California a few months later and between settling in and everything else that comes with that the estate planning side of things kept getting pushed to the back burner.
We're both in our early 30s and there's the house with a mortgage, some savings and a joint brokerage account we've been building up together and neither of us has a will a trust nothing set up at all and we're making moves on it this week on figuring out where to even begin.
Not sure if a basic will covers us or if owning property in California throws a wrench in that and everyone I keep asking seems to have a different take and I feel like we're going in circles on this and at this point we don't know which way is up, is a will enough for where we are or does our situation call for something more?
