Doctor Shared Sensitive Personal Information With My Employer After I Left A Bad Review
Location: Texas
I have been seeing a Doctor for nearly year for services that I’d rather not disclose. Over the period of that year I was billed close to $3,000. I didn’t immediately pay my bill because I was told on several occasions by the front desk staff that there was some issue with my health insurance and that they needed to speak with the doctor and my insurance company. However they repeatedly told me not to pay anything yet because they needed to figure it out with the doctor and that my bill would need to be adjusted once they figured out whatever was going on with the insurance. I continued to receive medical services while this was going on, and would ask them about this every week when I went in but no one could give me a clear answer about what was going on with my bill and the insurance.
This sort of back and forth went on for close to 2-3 months before I went in for treatment and was told I would need to pay half my bill if I wanted to continue to be seen by the doctor. I asked the front desk staff to speak to the Dr directly about this because the front desk staff still couldn’t give me a straight answer about what the issue was with my insurance.
After waiting some time the doctor comes out and starts yelling at me in the waiting room in front of patients and the staff. He called me a “fraud and a scammer.” I was mortified, as I think a lot of the staff and other patients were. I ended up paying half of my bill that day and put the remaining $1,500 on a payment plan, but told them there was no way I wanted to continue to receive services from them after what happened.
That day I went home and left a bad review on Google due to my experience. The doctor replied directly to my review and again called me a fraud and a scammer, saying I hadn’t paid my bill. Also worth noting - the other bad reviews for this Dr he also replied directly to their reviews and uses that same “fraud and scammer” phrase in nearly every response. In one response, he even says he’s going to forward their IP address to the FBI for them to prosecute the person leaving a bad review??
After seeing his response to my Google review I sent his office an email directly, attaching the invoice that shows me having paid the bill and the payment plan and I demanded an apology for the way he treated me in the doctors office and for calling me a fraud.
The doctor replied to my email but cc’d my boss on the email, again accusing me of trying to scam him. I guess he had looked up my name online and found where I worked and tracked down my employer and boss. My boss of course does not care and thinks it’s unprofessional of him to cc her. I sent the email to him from my personal email, my work was not involved in this matter in any way, I don’t even receive health insurance from my employer.
In that email he forwarded to my boss it includes the invoice which shows the sorts of medical services they’ve been providing to me. This feels like harassment and an invasion of my privacy. There’s no reason the Dr should have shared my info like that with my employer. Is this something worth consulting with an attorney about or should I just leave this alone?
