Ex Boyfriend Cut The Lock To Storage Unit Under My Name With Employee Present
*legal question at the end
Location: Illinois
5 or so months ago I got a storage unit for myself and then boyfriend, under the impression that we would both have space to store things. He completely filled it with his things the day after I got it (10' X 15' unit). The unit is in my name. He said he'd pay the monthly fee but never had the funds when it was time, so I ended up paying it for 3 months to avoid late fees or whatever penalties that could come of it. I ended up breaking up with him for various reasons and told him to get his things out so I can close the unit. Guess he lost his key and went to the unit & told an employee a story about "some crackheads robbing him" (seriously word for word) and the employee let him cut the lock to my unit with a tool he brought and she got him new keys for the new lock. That is what he told me.
So anyways- he ended up putting more shit in the unit. He is late on his payments. I don't think he will empty the unit- I just don't want to be responsible to pay any of this or tied to this. I thought my only option would be to hire a company to empty the unit because there's furniture I can't lift on my own otherwise id try myself.
**BUT since the employee let him cut the lock to a unit that wasn't in his name without my permission- could I somehow make a deal with them to take me off the unit or something?
