Ex-girlfriend Demanding Personal Belongings Left In My Mothers Home
Location: Indiana || I apologize if this is difficult to understand or poorly formatted, I do not use Reddit often || A previous partner of mine reached out to me today demanding that I return the items she left at my mothers residence during her time staying there. She has not lived at my mothers home, or even in the state for that matter, for over a year now. She was also never officially on a lease or any paperwork as she did not live there for long. Her moveout process was voluntary, and she had the ability to take any items of hers. While reaching out today, regarding the items, she insisted that me and my family were responsible for neglecting to inform her of the items left behind. She also stated that my mother had blocked her contact on Facebook (For Personal Reasons), thus making her unable to reach out. This was despite her ability to reach out to me or any other household members as well as submitting a formal request for the items via mail. The previously listed methods of contact have been open for the entirety of the past year, yet she neglected to make contact. She is demanding that we collect and ship all items (pertaining to her written list of belongings) to her new address, which is across state-lines. In addition to the shipping cost in full, she states that we are legally financially responsible for any items that are unable to be retrieved. There were many claims and personal attacks stating that I would be personally held responsible for any damages, despite me never having lived in the home, nor visiting often due to the level of health issues I have experienced this year. She had also threatened that if we were not to return the items to her satisfactory, that her and her family would come to my mothers residence to force them back. The items in question are various vinyl records and small sculptures. I maintained a patient and helpful attitude regarding the situation as I knew many of the items were of high sentimental value to her. Which was met by more hostility as she accused me of knowing the situation and doing nothing to return her items or inform. I was not present in the home while she moved out, yet I was present after the fact and saw some of the aforementioned belongings of hers. These belongings were left with no notice, nor any stated intention of retrieval. Following flood damage from the recent storms, many items were damaged and moved into the upstairs, some of which reside in my younger sisters bedroom. Which she claims is my mother and family stealing her property. I would be open to retrieving the items for her as I understand their importance. However, I do not believe that my family nor I should be held financially responsible for shipping or replacing belongings left in the home for over a year. Additionally she has not submitted any form of request formally or informally until today. The only legal references were in threats of her demanding payments that she believes are legally owed to her. I have full screenshots of the interaction with all details blurred, but I am unsure of the photo policy on this subreddit. I am wondering if me or my family can be held legally or financially responsible for something of this sort? I am currently considering sending a formal pickup request for her to meet at the local police station to retrieve the items, yet I am unsure on how to proceed.
TLDR; Ex briefly lived at my mothers house and without notice left belongings behind without any statements made on retrieval or storage. Now, 1 year later, Ex is demanding full reimbursement and the threat of her family arriving at my mothers home if she is not reimbursed to her liking.
