Father Passed, Mother Trying To Take My Life Insurance

location: Athens/Barrow, GA

This is a moral/legal question, because this is a lot to think about on my own to try to figure out if I’m right or what i can and/or should do.

2 Years ago my mother and father Separated, she and my younger brother moved out, cut ties for the most part and only talked to him when they needed something. I stayed with him for the 2 years (he was an alcoholic)

When they split up, my mother changed who receives his life insurance policy to me and my brother and we would split it 50/50.

So 2 months ago my father passed way, she forgot that she changed who received the money, so she was thinking she would get it. She actually looked at the policy a few weeks after realized that it went to me and my brother and started getting all emotional because she wasn’t getting it anymore.

My brother is under 18 and can’t receive lump sum yet, so, with his permission, i signed a paper that my mother told me said “it states that you are okay with giving me access to your brothers money until he’s 18” (which would’ve been a monthly payment from the court) and yes yes i know i should’ve read it.

2 weeks ago, i signed a form that was just some information about me, d.o.b. Address, ect, and 1 week later she comes to me and my brother and says “because I’m the policy holder, the insurance company is giving me the money” basically saying me and my brother are screwed out of what i believe is ours. The day after she told us that, she asked me to sign a paper saying i can’t sue her, i didn’t do that. And that’s what made me start question it.

I’m not sure what to do i guess. I don’t know if I’m in the right for thinking that way, or if I’m over reacting. I don’t know what kind of lawyer to contact if i were to contact one or what information i would need to provide.
