Fbi Background Check Is Showing An Arrest For A Crime I Never Knew I Committed

Card image cap

10 years ago I was arrested for unknowingly driving with a suspended license. (Received a ticket in another state I forgot to pay) Was arrested and spent a night in jail before bailing out the next morning. Charge was eventually dropped once I corrected everything with the court.

Flash forward 10 years. I apply for a job with my local city and they do a fingerprint FBI background check. The driving with a suspended license charge showed up which I disclosed but another arrest was also showing for cannabis possession >5000g. The date of the arrest was the same as my suspended license arrest. Only problem is this is the first time I’m hearing about it. Received no notice of charges. The lawyer I hired at the time said the only case they represented me on was for the suspended license and saw nothing else. I go on the county clerks website for the county that I was arrested in and only the suspended license charge shows and is closed.

What do I do here? Can I get this removed from my record? Luckily the city HR was amazing and hired me anyway, but for future jobs or just my record in general I really don’t want that becoming a problem. Any advice on who I can contact? All of the info I see has to do with expunged arrests or charges but this is something that doesn’t seem to exist anywhere but this level of background check.

Location: Illinois (where arrest occurred)
