Got A Virtual Court Date After Asking Why A Paid, Disposed Ticket Showed A Guilty Plea
Location: New Jersey
I'm in New Jersey and received a municipal parking ticket. I submitted a plea by mail and selected not guilty. I was found guilty and paid the ticket (over $100 dollars).
After I paid the ticket, I went online to the New Jersey Municipal Court Case Search portal and noticed that it said I pleaded guilty. That was strange because I pleaded not guilty. So I emailed the court trying to get clarification on that. I didn't get any reply, so I followed up a few more times (over a span of 5 weeks). I also called the court to try to get an answer, but they were unable to explain why it said I pleaded guilty. After one more follow up email, I received a virtual court date for the same ticket with no explanation. This is very strange because the ticket is paid and disposed. I just wanted to figure out why it said I pleaded guilty.
When I called the court to ask what this virtual court date was for, they said that since I emailed them, the judge wanted to explain why I was found guilty. They had no additional information for me. I also replied to the email with the virtual court date and radio silence.
I work during the scheduled time and am trying to understand if there is any way out of this or if my appearance is required. Has anyone dealt with something similar? All I wanted was clarification on why it said I pleaded guilty even though I pleaded not guilty. I did not think this would turn into a court date. The ticket is otherwise paid and disposed.
Edit: I also wish the court had been more communicative throughout this. A lot of this confusion could have been avoided with a clearer response.
