Gun Charges Question

Card image cap

Hi everybody. I hate to ask but I have a question regarding charges related to guns. This is located in Massachusetts.

Unfortunately my sister went through a moment of postpartum psychosis after having her baby a month ago. She attempted suicide and shot herself in the head. She is recovering miraculously but will have some long term brain damage. She is awake and aware of what happened and is very regretful of her actions. As a family we are all feeling the ripple effects of this and have been working with DCF and the doctors at the hospital non stop. Frankly, we’re all incredibly stressed out.

There was nobody else harmed and the baby is okay. We just learned today that she is formally charged with possession of a firearm without an FID card, possession of ammunition, and firing a weapon within a dwelling (I messed up the wording on this.) Nothing has been said to her about these charges yet, just my father was informed because he is her power of attorney for the time being. We don’t want her worrying about this while going through the recovery process and mess up what progress has been made so far from the psych team working with her.

My question is what are the chances these charges get dropped or reduced to a lighter sentence? And if she is found guilty what is the sentence and is there anyway she can keep her nursing license?

For context, she is a decorated nurse with absolutely zero priors and is an upstanding citizen outside of this postpartum depressive episode.

I understand the charges, and understand that while this was all under a postpartum episode this is still against the law.

Any and all advice is welcome, and thank you for your time.
