Gym Keeps Charging Me After I Canceled And Says They Can't Refund The Previous Charges

I canceled my gym membership a few months ago because I wasn't using it enough to justify the monthly cost. I went through their cancellation process and thought everything was taken care of. I was checking my bank statements recently and noticed they've continued charging me every month since then. I contacted the gym and showed them the cancellation confirmation. They acknowledged that my membership should have been canceled and said they could make sure I wasn't charged going forward.
The problem is they're refusing to refund the charges that happened after I canceled. They basically told me there's nothing they can do about previous billing periods. It's not a huge amount individually, but several months of charges have added up. I have proof showing when I canceled and bank statements showing every charge afterward.
Before I dispute the charges with my bank, is there anything specific I should do first? If the gym acknowledges that I canceled before these charges happened, can they legally refuse to refund them?
