Hours Cut After Asking Why A Government Workplace Allows Christmas Décor But Denied A Menorah? California
I’m dealing with something that feels like religious discrimination and I’m not sure what to do next.
I work for a government organization. Recently, they hung up a Christmas tree. In the past, whenever staff asked about putting up a menorah or recognizing any non-Christian holidays, it was always denied.
I emailed HR asking why a Christmas tree was allowed but other religious expressions weren’t. The same day, all my hours for the New Year were cut.
For context, I’m autistic and had previously requested reasonable accommodations. After I brought that up about a month ago, my hours were trimmed the same day as well. Now this religious display situation happened and again my hours were cut immediately after raising the issue.
I emailed HR explaining why I felt this was religious discrimination and asking for help, but I haven’t gotten meaningful support.
Is this legal? What should my next steps be? Document everything? File an EEOC complaint?
Any advice is appreciated.
