How Can I Safely And Legally Leave My Father, Who Relies On Me For Care?
Location: Oklahoma, United States
i'm coming up on a wall when it comes to figuring out my plans of escape. my situation is precarious, and heavily nuanced. i plan on moving to an entirely seperate state, not. entirely soon, but within the coming years for various reasons, the primary of which is to escape an abusive situation i find myself caged into.
back in 2021, a week before i had turned 21 ((i want to say the exact date was september 15 but i don't remember,,)) i had moved to oklahoma to live with my dad, who i've been stuck with since i moved here. he's in his mid 50's ((55 as of this year iirc)), and has been dealing with declining health and lives solely off of disability ((i do not know if it's ssd or something else)). currently, i am 25 years old, and while i cannot act this instant, i need to know what i can do, legally, to make sure that i am not held liable for what happens.
my main problem comes down to this; my dad has been formally diagnosed with dimentia, and has severe kidney failure and takes medication for a list of health issues, including mild epilepsy and chronic pain. i plan on leaving as soon as i can feasibly do so due to the major amounts of abuse he subjects me to. none of it is physical, but he has threatened to kill me numberous times, has bragged about hiding a body in the past, and has threatened severe bodily harm to me in the event that i attempt to call the police for help. currently, i rely on him due to his disability benefits, my inability to get a job due to my own issues, and our food stamps being combined into one account ((the foodstmps office here is wildly unresponseive in my own experiences in asking questions about separation, and as far as i know, the office here is permanently closed, which means i'll have to go to a physical office in okc [[okahoma city]] for my inquiries, which i cannot do as i do not own a car, nor driver's license)). my question is; if i leave while he is still alive and reliant on my care, will i be held liable for his death via neglect, or would the police not have a case against me? this question is for in the event that i leave, either from him falsely kicking me out again only to beg for my return, or he stops recognizing me due to cognitive decline.
tldr; seeking to escape an abusive situation, will i be held liable for elder abuse or neglect if i leave while he is still alive and reliant on my care?
