I Got Rear-ended, The Man Who Hit Me Denied To Me And Police He Did It. I’m Now Asked To Appear In Court.

About a month ago, my car was rear ended at a highway exit. I have never been in an accident before but I knew I had to pull over. I pull off to the side. The man that hit me wasn’t seeming to want to pull over so I motioned to him. He pulls over and asks what’s wrong. I say, “well you just hit me”. He doesn’t say anything for a moment, then says that he DID NOT hit me. I’m baffled. I say “sir, there is a dent on the back of my car that was not there before and I most definitely felt the impact” He then proceeded to argue with me that he didn’t hit me. I say that in order to make a claim with my insurance I’m going to call the police. (I didn’t actually know if that’s true, that’s just what I thought i was supposed to do). As I’m on the phone with the dispatcher, another car pulls over, this seems to be this man’s friend. I get back in my car as I’m uncomfortable at this point and I wait until the police show up. I speak to them, show them my car, explain what happened. The man also denies to the police that he hit me. The officer prints the incident/case number and I’m free to go home.
I decide to not file a claim with my insurance as the damage didn’t seem too bad and my car is old anyway, I’ll be getting a new one within a year. I don’t do anything further.
Today, I have received a Subpoena to Appear in Court. I have never been to court before and this just seems so odd that this man has brought it this far. I’m assuming he’s disputing his ticket.

Here is what the letter says -
Plaintiff: People of the state of Michigan
Defendant: The man who hit me

The said defendant is being charged with having committed the offense of:
Failed to Stop Clear Distance Ahead
In the name of the People of the State of Michigan, you are commanded personally to appear before said District Court, in said County, at the below listed date and time to testify to the truth, according to your knowledge in a certain cause now pending before the Court.
Day: Wednesday
Date: 06/17/2026
Time: 9:00am
Failure to appear at stated time and place may subject you to penalty for contempt of court.

Does anyone have advice on what to expect, what I should be prepared for, etc. ?
