How Do I Prove Pet Ownership In Divorce Litigation?
Location: Norfolk County, Massachusetts
My ex (30M) and I (30F) are getting a divorce in Massachusetts. We have a cat together that we adopted in April 2023, after his cat passed away in March that same year.
When he was adopted, my ex was the one who paid the initial adoption fee, and because he had a vet already set up for his previous cat, just transferred our cat into his account, leaving me off of the vet records. This also means I’m not listed as the primary owner on my cat’s microchip.
However, I have the primary caretaker over the past three years, feeding him, giving him meds, cleaning the litter box, etc. He spends every night in bed with me, and it is important I try to fight and keep him in my care. I know this won’t hold in court, so I have pulled all transactions over the past three years and found I’ve spent over $3000 on his care (vet bills, food, medication, toys, etc).
Does anyone have any advice on how to prove ownership or have experience with this? Will having proof of payments be enough to prove ownership?
