How Long Do I Have To Keep His Things?

Card image cap

I allowed my boyfriend to move into my home (California) about 16 months ago. Long story short, the narcissistic abuse began fairly soon after. I recently discovered he bought a home in another state, so I suggested that he go there. You know, check out the house he purchased without ever seeing. Basically, get acquainted with it. I expressed that I was not happy and that our relationship had grown toxic. We could use some time apart to slow down and regroup. He agreed, as long as I said I would work on the relationship and allow him to return in two weeks. A few days after he left with some of his belongings, I turned off the doorbell camera that he attached to my home (without permission). He blew up and threatened me over text.

Once this exchange occurred, the reality finally set in. This would never be a safe relationship. I sent him a text and let him know that I was not willing to live this way anymore. That I don't see a future for us and that I don't want him to return. It has been over a month since he left. He left behind personal items, his teenage son's bedroom furniture, and some of his son's toys. I have asked him several times how he wanted to go about collecting these things. I even asked him to pay the postage, and I would mail these things to him. I suggested that I would get a storage unit and place them inside. He could then have someone pick them up. Each time I attempt to resolve the issue, he gets angry and tells me I have no right to touch his things. My house has mold, and the floor is going to be completely removed. New flooring will be installed after that. I have to remove these items for the work to be done. It is time-sensitive. I feel that his personal stuff remaining here is a way to stay connected to me and my home.

How long do I have to hold onto these things? I have suggested many ways to resolve the issue. Thank you for any ideas. Location: California
