How To Legally Distance/protect Self From Estranged Parents
Location: Kentucky
Hi all,
Long-time lurker but first time poster. I am based in KY, heading into my 30s with parents in their late 50s.
My father verbally, emotionally, and physically abused myself and my siblings for the entirety of our childhood. My mother was not exactly abusive, but she very often turned a blind eye to what was going on. After receiving a PTSD diagnosis from my childhood, and trying to stabilize my own independent life, I decided to minimize all contact with them. Currently, I only interact with them on holidays and special occasions. I do not have any material contact with my siblings at this time.
It has come to my attention that my parents retirement savings are lackluster, at best. They have historically been over-spenders, and to my knowledge, this habit has not been dropped. I am concerned they are counting on myself & siblings to effectively be their retirement fund.
After a very short review of KRS statutes, I have a sinking feeling that I will become responsible for them after they blow what cash they have.
If anyone would be so kind, I have 2 things I'd like to know more on:
What kind of documentation should I start assembling now, ahead of time, to help protect myself?
Do you know of any similar cases I could refer to to get a barometer on how KY courts have ruled historically?
PS - I am completely comfortable with severing all ties to my parents. Unfortunately, moving out of state isn't in the cards at this moment.
