I Am "not To Clock In" Until An Unpaid Meeting. What Should I Do?
Location: VA
Started this job a couple weeks ago. They do these mandatory team meetings occasionally, at least twice a month. I arrived today at the time of, and asked a co worker about clocking in. I was told we don't. To clarify that this wasnt just for convenience and maybe they adjust time afterwords, I asked "do we get paid for these?" He replied "no." So I turned around and went home.
The GM later sent in the work group chat "Reminder if you weren't at the meeting you are not to clock in until you meet with me for the monthly OSHA training."
"*the monthly OSHA training*" sounds like a separate thing from these staff meetings since there have been multiple this month already, but even if it was a required OSHA training meeting, that time does need to be compensated, right? Whether it's OSHA-related or otherwise, as long as it's mantadory? I looked briefly into the Fair Labor Standards Act and just wanted to make sure I'm interpreting it correctly. I'm not sure what to do, is my only option to go through an unpaid meeting? If I refuse and they fire me, do I have any recourse?
