I Have 50/50 Custody With Ex. He’s Recently Brought Up Moving To Another State. Need Advice…
My ex (m33) and I (f33) have 50/50 custody of our kids (m12 & f8). A bit of background…. We live in Tennessee. We’ve been divorced since 2019 and are both remarried. We co-parent relatively well but we do have our disagreements occasionally. His wife (let’s call her A) has a kid from a previous marriage and they have 2 more kids together. I am currently 38weeks pregnant.
A sent me this text last week saying… (we’ll call my ex D). Also I don’t know what the job situation will be for D. The move is for A new job.
“D can also talk with you about this too but for now I just wanted to run it by you just to gauge. We have been discussing about moving to the top of Florida. I was offered a job opportunity that would require relocating. Nothing is set in stone but we are curious to know how you'd be willing to work with that. Of course it would be an updated parenting plan whatever is agreed to, but an example were thinking would be you have full school years then D get the summers and one week at Christmas break. You would claim both kids in exchange for no child support. Something along those lines. Again, this is just in a trial phase but we are seeing how things could work before a commitment is made.”
I obviously would not agree to no child support and him getting them the whole summer. I would alternate spring/fall break if they were interested. But there’s more things that I need to discuss with D like transportation between TN and FL, health insurance for the kids (he provides it atm), medical expenses not covered by insurance, our 12 y.o. will need braces eventually, sports expenses, after school care, phone calls. I know that the child support will be used to cover things like sports and anything fun with school they will be having. But things like after school care and medical expenses I would like to be split 50/50 in cost. And how does insurance work? I’m assuming I would have to get them covered on insurance since he will be out of state so the child support will also help with that.
I haven’t actually talked with him directly about this. When swapping kids yesterday I had a small discussion with A and she said that we need to talk very soon about this because it would be as soon as April or May they would be moving. I’ve set up an appointment with our attorney. I want to know how serious they are about moving before spending a big chunk of money to get this drawn up. Any advice?
