I Received A Notice That My Bf Is No Longer Allowed To Stay Overnight Due To Guest Policy; I Found Out My Apartments Management Is Practically Stalking Me What Can I Do?

Location: Illinois, USA

I received a notice that I had exceeded the amount of days I’m allowed to have a guest overnight according to my lease (4 consecutive days or 10 total overnights). I do not think I have exceeded either of these, but I’ll admit I’m not sure. On their end they were also unable to offer me a concrete explanation or tell me which days they’d recorded him as having stayed over. Nor did they tell me how many days they counted me as having him stay the night in this notice or when I called. When I contacted them explaining they said I’d exceeded it so he may not stay over anymore. I asked how they were tracking this because nowhere in the lease does it say that guests have to sign in or identify themselves in any way when staying the night.

According to them I am supposedly being noticed by staff to the extent where they are taking time attempting to piece together how often my partner comes over rather than a more appropriate system like having him sign in and out. I was told this isn’t possible because office hours where staff are present are 6-9, but what they are going off of is instances of him coming in the early afternoon then again the next day in the early morning. He works a night shift and I have school so sometimes he comes early morning and we leave in the morning. Other than going back through security footage they would have no way of keeping track of these except for heavily surveying my comings and going’s which is making me very uncomfortable especially as one of the few Black women in my apartment building. They are going based on seeing him come in the day before (usually when I don’t have class) in the morning and “leaving” the next morning (after also arriving that same morning when no staff is onsite) I think is being in an interracial relationship doesn’t help either. I’m uncomfortable with being surveyed and having my comings and going monitored as heavily as the situation suggests has been happening. Even if he never came back, I’m still creeped out by how heavily I’m being watched in an apartment I pay for monthly.
