I Received A Phone Call From The “settlement Claims Department” And The Caller Turned Hostile - Worried About Repercussions.

I was recently in a car accident (while in a loaner vehicle). I filed a police report at the police department after the incident, called my insurance and filed a claim, and called the dealership to inform them of the incident.

Up until this phone call, everything was going smooth and being handled by my insurance.

I received a voicemail from an individual stating they’re were calling for me by name, explained they were from the Settlement Claims Department, and were calling in regarded to the accident. They gave the incorrect date of the accident in the voicemail and the settlement claims department line was so generic my “scam alert” perked up.

I called my insurance company first, they advised it wasn’t from them, then I asked around to some family and friends. Ultimately I returned the call but kept my responses vague.

The call started with them answering and indicating the same name they left in the voicemail. I simply stated “I’m calling about a voicemail”. They immediately mentioned the other drivers name, and then explained the incident and stated “the other driver stated there was minimal damage to their vehicle, do you agree with this?”

I asked who they represent, are they the other drivers lawyer or insurance. They said they represent the state.

They asked again if I agree with the “minimal damage claim”. I stated “everything is going through my insurance and I’m not confirming anything.”

They turned hostile and stated I was “making their job more difficult”

At the end of the day I never confirmed anything but my name and that it was all being handled by my insurance and the police report was filed.

It sounded like a scam call to me. I informed my insurance of the call and gave them the callers details but no Google searches returned any information.
