I Refused To Accept Legal Papers From A Process Server Because I Thought It Was A Scam. What Do I Do Now?

Location: California

I'll try to keep the story short-ish, but happy to provide more details in the comments.

I was at work 4 days ago, and one of my coworkers came to tell me that someone was looking for me. I manage a busy public-facing business, so this is a common occurrence. I didn't know if the person had asked for me by name, or just asked to speak with the manager.

When I came up to talk to the woman who had asked for me, she said she had some legal papers for me. For whatever reason, it didn't occur to me that I was being "served", because that's never happened to me and to my knowledge there's no reason for it to happen. The first thing that came to mind was that it was some kind of scam. Like many others, I often get scam phone calls offering me some kind of "rebate" or other easy money, so I figured that maybe they were moving into the real world. On top of that, I was extremely busy and pretty stressed at that moment, so I didn't have time to stop and think it through.

I told the woman "I'm sorry, I don't know what you're talking about; I think this is a mistake. I'm at work right now and I don't have time." Then I walked away. The woman was pretty low-key and didn't try to argue or anything. According to my coworker, she stayed for a few more minutes, and then he asked her to leave, and she did.

Later on in the evening, when I had a moment to stop and think, I realized that it may have been a legitimate attempt to serve me papers. I also remembered that the previous day, someone had come to my house asking for me. My girlfriend had answered the door, and assuming that it was some kind of marketing or scam thing, said I wasn't home and closed the door.

I know that they are required to try several times to deliver the documents, but does that change based on the fact that they actually spoke to me face-to-face and I refused to accept the documents?

I've tried to do my due diligence by searching my name in the county court records (didn't find anything) and checking my credit report to see if there was some debt I was unaware of (I have none). I figured maybe they'd come back to my house in the next day or two, but either me or my girlfriend have been home basically all the time, and they haven't come. Obviously I want to see the documents and figure out what's going on, but I can't figure out how to do that. I can't think of a single reason why someone would be suing me, or subpoena-ing me, or anything, so the mystery of it all is weighing on me heavily. Any help would be much appreciated!

A couple stray observations about the attempted document delivery if it helps:

- The woman didn't say my full name, only my first name (which I figured she could've gotten from my coworker)

- I got a tiny look at the papers she was holding, and they did look like legitimate legal papers, for what it's worth (they had form numbers at the top like an IRS form)

- She did at one point say who the documents were from, but she was very soft-spoken and I didn't understand what she said. I didn't ask for clarification because I wasn't really trying to get deeper into the conversation.
