I Want To Run Away

Card image cap

Location: Washington I’m 17 and I’m trying to understand what my legal options are because I feel really stuck at home right now.

My mom isn’t a bad person, she just doesn’t really understand how to help me with what I’m dealing with. I have pretty bad anxiety and she keeps making me sign up for programs I don’t want to do, and she won’t let me switch to online school. Instead she’s forcing me into this tech college program that feels really overwhelming for me.

I’ve tried explaining this to her but it feels like she doesn’t listen. I also get yelled at for things I can’t really control, which just makes everything worse.

I’ve been thinking about leaving and trying to become independent, but I don’t have a stable place to go yet and I don’t want to get into legal trouble or make things worse for myself.

I live in Washington State. What are my legal options at 17? Can I leave home or live somewhere else without getting in trouble? Is there any way I can make decisions about my schooling (like switching to online or working toward a GED) without my parent agreeing?

I’m not trying to do anything reckless, I just want to understand what I can and can’t legally do so I don’t mess up my future.
