I Was Fired After I Called The Cops On My Coworker
Location: Gwinnett County Georgia
I was fired, today, after an altercation with a coworker in which I called the police out of concern for my safety.
We're both shift leaders, however, I've been a lot more reliable than her. And not even trying to be any kind of "I'm better and she sucks". It's honestly the truth. She's late all the time, she calls off a lot, she was arrested and had to take time off of work. Meanwhile, I covered every one of her shifts and then some. Plus other stuff I've been working hard to help get things up to speed. So, today, I come in an hour early after being asked to and T (coworker) is already there working on prep (restaurant) And F (my GM) is saying he has to leave for some work errands but won't be gone long. She immediately starts giving me attitude Everytime I asked her about what she was working on because I was told to help her finish prep. After the second time I confronted her attitude and asked why she was being so impatient with me. And it turned into a huge guffaw. F had to hold T back because she just went crazy and yelling at me. I just hid in the walk-in. F then tells me to finish working on prep, she'll open the front and he'll be back. Okay fine. I'll do my job and keep to myself. As soon as he leaves, she's on the phone with someone loudly talking about what happened, and making all sorts of threats. I text F everything that's going on while he's gone, I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable. He leaves me on read. Okay, I'll handle that when he gets here. Keep working. I then had to walk past her to get ingredients, but she's blocking my way and I'm trying to avoid talking to her and any confrontation, so I try to scoot past her. I brushed against her and immediately apologized. She went wild and started making more threat about how she was going to "beat my ass" if I touched her again, and so on, cornering me. I managed to get past and told her if she didn't calm down, I would call the police. She continued to scream at me, calling me a "pussy as hoe" and all sorts of other things. Remember, we're completely alone. It's just us 2 in the store. So, I step out, call F and tell him what happened and that I'm going to call the police. He tells me to call them. She dips at some point, I assume because she's on probation. My boyfriend comes up to be with my so I'm not alone until Fbcomes back.
Once he finally shows up, he tells me that his boss (M) is sending us home. Okay fine. I'll make up my hours later and I'll explain my story.
A couple hours later, I get notifications that I'm being removed from the schedule. My boss's texted response, "I will call u later but after talkign with m i have decided to let both go and he aggreed we cant have spouses come to the job nor polices and we cant have employees threatenig one another "
Meaning, the reason I was fired was because my boyfriend was there keeping me safe and I called the cops. And threats were made (not by me)
I am still within my 90 days. It's a franchise of a large named corporation. There are no working cameras or audio. She did leave before the cops could question her.
Is there any legal action I can take? Wrongful termination? Unsafe work environment? He left me alone with her knowing that she was angry, hostile and unstable. And now because of being let go, I will be losing my place to live.
TLDR; I was fired for calling the police on a coworker after she threatened and came after me, and my manager left me alone with her knowing she was aggressive. Can I sue?
