If I Am Attacked In A Public Place With A Weapon And My Dog Bites Down On The Perpetrator, Will The Dog Be Labeled A Bite Risk?
Location: AZ
So I’m not sure what this would qualify as but my situation is this: I have two dogs. I was walking them in public along the road. A man had started following me in a way that made me nervous a few feet behind. Since one of my dogs is a 100lbs malamute/Great Pyrenees mix, people normally don’t mess with me and I feel safe around him even though he’s secretly the friendliest nicest boy around. So I was just trying to walk and get away to the nearest bus stop. But then suddenly this guy, who’s talking to himself and acting a bit erratically, pulled out a knife and then started like jabbing it in the air at me while approaching more quickly, talking aggressively at me. I have poor hearing so I couldn’t understand him. My dogs still by my side. At that point I got too scared to turn my back from him or look away from him because of fear he might charge. After a few seconds he actually did run at me, and that’s when I was fumbling for my pepper spray and fell (I have hEDS and cerebral palsy so I have a hard time running). I honestly didn’t know what would happen but my dog, who’s I didn’t even know how he would react if I was ever in danger because hes so friendly, kinda jumped forward and bit him on the upper thigh (he’s a tall dog so that was at his mouth level). He held on for a few seconds while the guy was reeling back and then let go. The guy didn’t try to come at me again and actually started trying to run away despite probably needing medical care immediately. I was shaking and called my caregiver while finally some other people started coming trying to stop him and calling 911. I was unharmed so I called my caregiver to ask her to take my dog to the vet quickly because he had a stab wound that turned out to be superficial. I ended up going to the hospital anyway when the EMTs left because of my health issues and my fall they really wanted to check on me. I assume police will contact me for details of the situation since it is being reported and the suspect is in custody.
My question is, in this scenario, if I tell the police in detail about my dogs reaction, is he at risk for being put down or labeled a bite risk? I’m just really torn up emotionally crying because I’m scared they’re going to euthanize my best friend for wanting to protect us.
