Il Father’s Messy Estate

Hi.
Location: Illinois
I really am desperate for some legal guidance of some kind.
So my father passed away in TN while on a work trip April 28, 2024.
He is from southern Illinois and I now live in Colorado. Have for 10 years.
I am his eldest daughter and am in charge of his estate.
He had no will.
I returned the truck he was making payments on.
He does have a house and some cars.
I hired a lawyer from the town who didn’t help much at all.
His life insurance policy cannot be paid out to us they are claiming he was 40 hours short of qualifying for the year. Since he passed in April. Turns out he had a former employer (he would work additional jobs in the winter when laid off from his union painter job) and they were being sued for not paying any employees and owed my father 8k which they did not report due to going out of business. This would have put him at the qualifying amount of hours for his insurance policy.
I have no idea the outcome of this court case and haven’t been contacted about anything. I’ve basically let the estate sit for two years. I have to start handling everything now that I’ve learned to manage my grief and my own life.
I don’t even know where to start.
Please help.
