Incredibly Loud Industrial Noise Keeping My Family Awake At Night And Stressing Out Our Animals.

Location: Fox Crossing Wisconsin

Hi, I normally don't post to reddit much, but I am going to try and get my thoughts out here as best as possible.

My wife and I moved into a new home a couple of months ago. We knew before buying the house that it is very close to a heavy industrial zone and we might experience some noise from trains, trucks, and beepers on vehicles. However, I was not prepared for the incredibly loud grinding noise that happens almost every night.

Just about every week night there is a pulsing, vibrating noise that starts at 8:30pm and will last all the way up until about 4am. The noise is so loud and at the perfect frequency that it vibrates the home, so even if you could block the sound, you could still feel it happening. I narrowed down the location of the noise and it's about 1/2 mile away. I noticed while sitting outside of the business that there is big grinding machine that pulverizes rocks or something.

I realize that they have a business to run, but if there was truly no way to make this better, I wouldn't even bother to complain. They have a big building with a garage door that they leave wide open. When it's really cold outside, they close the garage door and the noise is barely noticeable.

I talked to my neighbors about this noise and asked if they noticed it. I was not surprised to learn that the noise has been a problem for awhile and it annoys everyone. We are not even the closest houses to this place, I can imagine what the people think who live right next to it.

After weeks of listening to this and wondering if maybe they just do this at night when they are behind or something, I decided to reach out to the company to see if they could close the garage door after 11pm. I think this is a very reasonable ask as they close the door when it's cold, this is not a ventilation issue. I didn't receive a response from them but the noise seemed to get a little better. I thought maybe the read it and asked the workers to keep it down at night as to not irritate the neighborhood.

A few weeks later and the noise is back and louder than ever. I decided to take the next step and call the non emergency number to file a formal complaint for the noise. I was met with immediate backlash from the officer who said since it's zoned as industrial, they can make as much noise as they want. I find this hard to believe... Does this mean if you are in an industrial zone, you could sound a siren all night long without any repercussions?

I tried digging into the local ordinances but all I can find is this.

"No person shall erect, contrive, cause, continue, maintain or permit to exist any public nuisance within the Village of Fox Crossing."

I can't find anything in the local ordinances that states industrial zones are exempt from this.

I am not a legal expert but I very much would like to take this complaint to the village hall and fight this, not just for me but for the neighborhood. I am not someone who likes to complain but this is over the top noise that can easily be dampened by closing a door.

Any help or advice would be amazing!

Sorry for the long and winded post. I hope this makes sense, it's 12:30 and I can't fall asleep because of the noise right now.
