Involved In A “hit And Run “ That Never Happened

Received a surprising letter in the mail by Denver police department a few weeks ago that my vehicle was involved in an accident/crash and that I took off from the scene of the incident. I called the detective and asked what it was about, detective told me that my vehicle and other involved party vehicle collided while changing lanes and I took off. I told detective that it’s not true, I was not involved in any crash, I had witnesses in my car and they’re willing to testify that it’s not true.

I was instructed to stop by the police dept and bring the vehicle for the inspection. That police detective also told me that my vehicle has a damage on the passenger side tho I do not have a hair scratch, I was never involved in anything.

A week goes by, I stop by the department and detective starts taking picture of the car, right away I noticed she’s not even interested in any body panels of the car since they’re visually brand new and scratch free, she then proceeds taking pictures of the tire sidewall and thread. I was like why are you taking pictures of the sidewall, I live in downtown Denver and I don’t have a private driveway so I always park sidewall touching the curb so all them sidewall scratches are from due to me parking next to my house. Then she proceeds to tell me that I collided with another vehicle with my tire, mind you this so called “accident” happened 3 months ago.

I was just shocked, she told me she’s not giving me a ticket but this will be civil matter now, didn’t give me other sides info or anything, told me she’s not supposed to provide me with anything and only my attorney or insurance get obtain that information, also demanded that I provide them my insurance.

Yet again, I’m telling her I was not involved in anything and she’s telling me they have my license plate at that time and location. I asked if they have a dash cam video of the crash or even traffic camera of this happening to that she responded no, all they have is their word and they took photo of my license plate.

I just don’t know what to do. Do I need to call and hire a lawyer? I’m heavily involved in trucking business and my driving record will impact the safety score of my business, I can’t afford to have things like that on my driving record.
