Is It Legally Reasonable Not To Pursue Possible Paternity?
Location: WA
A few years ago, I was messing around with someone one morning, and she was messing around with her now-partner that same night. They later had a child and are still together, unmarried. He’s raised the child since birth, and I believe he signed the acknowledgment of parentage, but I haven’t verified that.
After looking into it myself and comparing photos, I’ve noticed striking similarities between the child’s features, my own, and my confirmed biological daughter’s. I understand that resemblance isn’t proof, but it’s enough to make me question it. Since we were both with her the same day, timing can’t distinguish between us.
Nobody has ever suggested I’m the father or requested testing or support. We have no contact. I’m not seeking parental rights or looking to disrupt their family. I’m also concerned that raising an unverified suspicion could affect how he treats the child.
Do I have any legal duty to pursue this? Could leaving it alone increase my exposure to back support if I’m later established as the father, even if another man acknowledged parentage and has raised the child from birth? As far as i know theres no legal process to say “✋ Hey, if this is a problem I’m right here”?
