Trying To Stop My Mom From What I (think) Is Fraud.
Location: Mom:Tennessee Brother:Louisiana
I could be completely wrong, I’ve never bought a house. It just sounds deceptive.
My brother called my mom and asked her to help him with putting a down payment on a house. He already has the money (he got a loan from some bank) but he needs to send it to her and then have her send it back to him as a gift. He says that his broker told him to do this and that it was to avoid them looking into something? Or maybe to hide that the down payment is debt? I’m not sure.
I told her this sounds sketchy as hell. I tell her to call her two sisters. One agrees with me and says it’s fraud, the other says it’s fine.
I will vouch for my brother in that I know it’s not in his character to scam his own mom. I’m more worried about whoever he’s working with that wants him to jump through these hoops.
Edit:
To make my inexperience clear, while I am an adult, I am 20 years my brother’s junior. (Adopted) so I don’t feel I have enough experience to outright call it illegal.
Also I tried getting some more info about the lender/broker/whatever it is but got evaded so….
Edit 2:
Well she’s doing it. Whatever. I asked her if she really understood what she was doing and she said “helping her son” so gonna go f*ck myself. Even asked me to help print off the gift letter. Hell no.
