Is My Boss Illegally Taking The Employees Tips?

Card image cap

Location: Iowa.

TLDR: I work a job that is over minimum wage. Staff handle most customer interaction and all food and drink making. My bosses take all of the tip money, even those designated for staff. Is that illegal?

Hello everyone, I just recently started working at a small local coffee shop. It's in Iowa, but I live in Illinois and travel to work for this business. I enquired the owner about a barista position one time while dining there. I was immediately offered a job after explaining my background. I asked about tips, and she went around the question. After working for 2 days, I was handed paperwork at the end of my shift. In small print at the bottom of the paper work, it said "note, this is not a tipped position." The job pays 11 an hour, which is above iowas minimum wage, but is still criminally underpaid for the amount of work 3 employees of running the entire back of house. Especially compared to my state of Illinois 15hr minimum wage. Almost every customer dines in, and us staff serve them. Our bosses do take most orders, and therefore they take all the tips. Even those directly designated for the staff. The staff also buss all tables.
