Laid Off For Not Wanting To Go To Church?

Location: California

Hello Everyone.

I’m posting this on behalf of my mother who was a IHSS provider. My mother informed me that she was recently laid off by her IHSS recipient. My mother had been a provider for a couple of months. My mother actually really enjoyed her job and duties as a provider. The only down side was that the recipient would constantly speak to my mother about her religion(JW) and force her religion on her. The recipient would always ask my mother to drive her to church outside of her working hours, but my mother explained to her that driving her to church was not part of her duties as a provider. Recently the recipient demanded my mother drive her to several upcoming religious events and my mother wait for her during this events, some of which would take up to 6 hours. She also told my mother she would not help her with any gas money. My mother told her that she had her own obligations outside of work and would not be able to take her to such events. My mother informed me that the recipient fired her on the spot. My mother’s been a little upset/depressed lately.

My question is, can she do this? I keep telling my mother to call IHSS and inform them of what happened. Legally can the recipient do this?
