Landlord Entered My Apartment Without Notice For A Quick Check Do I Have Any Recourse
Location: New York I rent an apartment and something happened this week that didn’t sit right with me. I was at work during the day and when I got home, I noticed a couple things slightly out of place. Nothing major, but enough that it felt like someone had been inside.
A few hours later my landlord texted saying he had stopped by earlier to do a quick check on something related to the building. No prior notice, no emergency, just a heads up after the fact like it was normal. This isn’t something we’ve ever discussed before, and my lease doesn’t say anything super specific beyond general maintenance access. I’ve always assumed they need to give notice unless it’s an emergency, and this definitely wasn’t one.
I have some money saved up so I’m not stuck here if things get weird, but I don’t want to overreact if this is somehow standard. At the same time, it feels like a clear boundary issue.
Do landlords have the right to enter like that without notice, or is this something I should be pushing back on immediately?
