Landlord Increased The Month To Month Rent By 160% While On Vacation.
Location: Oklahoma. So, l've been living in the US for about three years and finally went on a trip abroad. Right before | left, the previous manager sent me a contract offer for my renewal.
Everything seemed fine. Fast forward to last week while on vacation: I get a call from a new manager who apparently just took over, and she drops a total bomb. She says my month to month rate is now $4,000 (160% increase from old offer).
When I told her that was nowhere near the offer for the month to month rate I had from the last manager, she basically told me the old offer isn't valid anymore, mind you it was sent a few weeks prior to me leaving. The call got heated fast. I ended up threatening to sue because the whole thing felt like a shakedown. She told me my only options are to sign a year long renewal (which I definitely don't want to do) or pay the new $4k rate.
I told her I'm not even going to be back at the apartment until late April anyway and hung up. She followed up with an email trying to "make our communication official," but I'm stressed and I haven't even replied.
The timing is actually the worst:
- I just had surgery. I'm literally in recovery right now.
- Even if 1 were 100% healthy, there is zero chance | can find a new place and move all my furniture in a week.
- I have a mountain of work projects piled up that I
- promised to deliver within days of getting back.
- l've never dealt with anything like this before. Do 1 have any legal grounds here since I have the previous offer in writing? Can I just refuse to move for a few months and fight them in court?
