Landlord Keeping Total Security Deposit

Hi, not entirely sure what to do in the case so I’m reaching out to ask for some advice. Me and my partner are moving and our landlord has told us we have forfeited our security deposit because we broke our lease. We live in West Virginia and have our landlord a 60 day notice stated in our lease. The deposit is 900 and my partner doesn’t wanna fight but we’ve been good tenants. We’ve never missed a bill or rent, only messaged him when it came to problems such as sewage backing up into the tub twice. What should I do? State law states he can’t keep the full amount but the lease says he can withhold the total amount for breaking the lease.

My question now is what’s the difference in withholding and forfeiture of the deposit? If he can withhold for breaking the lease anytime, and in other words we forfeit the deposit if 60 day notice isn’t given. This where I’m needing understanding of the terms.

Edit: our lease ends in May but due to family with cancer we’ve decided to move at the end of next month. In the lease it states “The LESSEE shall have on deposit with LESSORS a security/damage deposit. Said Deposit, less the costs of required repairs and maintenance and any outstanding rent payments, shall be returned to LESSEE within thirty (30) days of the lease termination. Im addition, LESSEE shall be required to give at least sixty (60) days of intent to vacate the premises prior to the end of the lease period. Failure to complete the term of the lease will result in a withholding of the total deposit. Failure to give this sixty (60) notice will result in the forfeiture of the Deposit. Forfeiture of said Deposit will not relieve LESSEE from costs of required repairs and maintenance.” 6 months left on lease
